Welcome to Learning about HTML

This workshop is designed to teach the fundamentals of HTML to someone who is familiar with the web, but not with how it is put together. To be a good designer, it is important to spend time looking at other pages on the web - but not just surfing, really looking at what works and what doesn't work in someone else's page.

There are sites on the web dedicated to the worst of the web, either in design or content. These can be somewhat instructive in what NOT to do, but the best of the web is far more inspiring. Try to find pages you really admire, and then you can use the reveal source command to get some ideas about how they achieved the desired results. Note that I am not saying go out and steal entire web sites, that violates a lot of copyright laws, but do look for designs that inspire you. Seeing truly great web pages is certainly an inspiration when designing your own.

The site we are going to design today is far from great, but should provide sufficient complexity to prove worth the effort. By clicking on this next link, you can see an example of what we are going to build today. We will be building the first page (with the rocket ship) from scratch, and the other pages will simply need to be modified from the original.

In order to build these files we will need several data files for the graphics and partially built second and third pages. To get those files click on the next link which will download the data files to your local computer. When asked where to put the files, choose the floppy disk (drive A:).

Once the files have been downloaded they need to be "expanded" from their self-extracting zip file named HTMLFile.exe which should be located on drive A:. Using WIndows Explorer look on your floppy disk and double click the file. Double clicking will open a dialog box which asks where you want to place the expanded files. Choose drive A: and then hit the "extract" button to inflate the files back to their original size. Once inflated the Word document named FileList.doc will list the names and sizes of all the files that were expanded.

You are now ready to start learning all about HTML - good luck!
